A Workington Rapist, Alan Adam, from West Cumbria, who absconded after attempting to assault a sleeping woman sexually, has received a nine-year prison sentence.

The dock of Carlisle Crown Court was vacant when Judge David Potter sentenced 38-year-old fugitive Alan Adam, who had refuted the charges of sexually abusing the woman and attempted to rape her.

Previously residing on Harrington Road, Workington, Alan Adam remains at large and did not attend his trial last week, resulting in a conviction in his absence.

The jury was informed that the victim hesitantly consented to share a drink with Alan Adam, during which he inundated her with beverages.

She instantly remembered feeling poorly, leading her to assume that her drink had been tampered with, although no medical proof supported this claim. The woman explicitly conveyed her lack of sexual interest in Alan Adam.

She had retired to a bedroom to sleep, only to awaken in horror to find Alan Adam sexually assaulting her.

In concluding the case, Judge David Potter stated: “She was unaccustomed to consuming that amount, yet none of it was her responsibility.” I am confident that the defendant exploited the evident incompetence her condition exhibited.

The woman was asleep on a bed when Alan Adam awakened her by first assaulting and then attempting to rape her.

The judge said, “She promptly objected and declined his request.”

Notwithstanding this, Judge Potter stated that Alan Adam aggressively propelled the woman into the bed and made a “concerted effort” to sexually assault her, his attempt thwarted solely by the woman’s resolute bodily resistance.

Alan Adam subsequently informed the police that the sexual encounter was consensual.

A medical examination of the victim indicated she had sustained intimate injuries that corroborated her statement, demonstrating that Adam had certainly employed force in his attempt to rape her. Prosecutor Robert Smith subsequently presented a comprehensive victim impact statement from the woman.

“Upon reflection, I experience vivid recollections of the moment I was exploited,” she stated.

I persist in experiencing dreams, accompanied by tears. I am a fractured individual due to that man; I cannot utter his name and never shall. He has shattered my trust, and I doubt I will ever trust a man again. This will result in lifelong complications for me.

“Alan Adam exploited my vulnerability while I was unconscious and inebriated; he attempted to assault me, and that experience will haunt me eternally.”

She expressed that she could no longer exit her residence without trepidation and questioned whether she might attain genuine happiness again. She expressed satisfaction that the jury had delivered guilty convictions about Adam.

She anticipated that he would ultimately confront justice if he returned to the UK. However, she proposed that the repercussions of his crime persisted, as she had experienced humiliation and pain, however she now aspires to reconstruct her life.

Judge Potter observed that the woman was ‘especially susceptible,’ and although he dismissed the idea that her drink was tampered with, he indicated that Alan Adam had urged her to consume alcohol with the expectation of her becoming inebriated.

He sentenced Alan Adam to nine years in prison, noting that he will not be eligible for parole until he has served a minimum of two-thirds of the complete term. Alan Adam will be permanently listed on the Sex Offender Register.

Alan Adam’s present location is unclear; nevertheless, authorities have verified that he embarked on a ferry to France in July of the previous year.

The jury required only 90 minutes to convict him on the two charges presented.
