A male individual, Ben Tate Harehills Paedophile, who subjected an adolescent girl to a systematic and sustained pattern of sexual, physical, and psychological mistreatment, then proceeded to commit the act of sexual assault on an adult female, has been sentenced to a term of imprisonment lasting 19 years.
Ben Tate, a 21-year-old resident of St Wilfrids Avenue, Harehills, was found guilty of two charges of rape, which occurred on various occasions between 2017 and 2020. Additionally, he was convicted of one count of coercive and controlling behaviour, all directed towards a single victim.
In addition, he was found guilty of one count of rape in connection with the second victim for an incident that occurred in 2021.
In 2020, the initial victim disclosed the abuse to a social worker. The police were informed, but she could not provide sufficient evidence to pursue legal action at that time.
In 2022, when the second victim notified the police about being sexually assaulted by Tate, the first victim also consented to assist in pressing charges.
Specialist officers from the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit interviewed both victims and obtained extensive video-recorded statements regarding Ben Tate’s offences against them.
Each individual revealed that they had assaulted them while they were asleep and engaged in sexual activity without their consent.
The initial victim also recounted how Ben Tate would restrain her, commit acts of violence against her, and asphyxiate her while disregarding her cries for him to cease.
Ben Tate consistently exerted control over her, employing tactics such as making suicidal threats and exploiting her financially.
Officers collected comprehensive testimony from the acquaintances and relatives of the victims, in addition to acquiring digital evidence of the messages Tate had transmitted to the victims.
They received assistance from safety officials and independent sexual violence advocates throughout the investigation.
He was found guilty after a trial at Leeds Crown Court, during which the victims could provide their testimony using unique techniques that permitted their cross-examinations to be recorded in advance.
Ben Tate received a 19-year prison term and will be permanently listed on the sex offenders registry. Both victims were also issued permanent restraining orders against him.
Detective Inspector Kelly Brown, from the Leeds District Safeguarding Unit, expressed concern over Ben Tates repeated harmful actions towards two distinct victims, indicating a troubling behavioural pattern that poses a threat to women.
“The victims who have courageously come forward have been greatly affected by his actions, causing significant trauma.” We anticipate witnessing his apprehension and subsequent legal proceedings, which will provide solace and reassurance to the affected individuals as they progress.
The substantial sentence he has been given serves as a clear demonstration of the courts’ commitment to addressing violence against women and girls. We anticipate that this will encourage future victims of similar abuse to come forward, assured that their voices will be heard and they will receive the necessary support.
“We will consistently prioritise and take strong action against crimes of this kind, making every effort to assist victims and ensure the successful prosecution of individuals like Tate to safeguard others from potential harm.”
