A courageous survivor and her family have lauded Northumbria Police following the sentencing of her abuser, the ewcastle Paedophile, Brett Wight, to 15 years in prison.
Brett Wight, 47, perpetrated repeated rapes against the victim, resulting in enduring physical injuries.
The courageous woman stepped forward and reported the offences to the police.
The Force promptly initiated an inquiry, and in 2023, Brett Wight was charged with several sexual crimes.
At the end of last year, Brett Wight, of Throckley, Newcastle, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court, where a jury convicted him of four counts of rape following a two-week trial.
And on Friday, he attended the same court where a judge sentenced him to 15 years in prison, with a further eight years to be spent on an extended licence.
He will also have to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and was given a restraining order.
Following Brett Wight’s sentencing, the sister of the survivor of his crimes has shared the following words in praise of Northumbria Police. She said:
I want to draw attention to the remarkable actions of Northumbria Police.
I cannot emphasise how much of an impact the brilliance of Northumbria Police has had on my family.
I can honestly say that we would not have had this result had it not been for your amazing police force.
Particularly those officers who have been by our side and supported us since the start – Detective Constable Leo Douglas and Police Constable Kris Wightman; they are the absolute guardian angels. The care, attention, support, and professionalism shown are astonishing.
I cannot emphasise enough how important it is that those officers on my sister’s case are recognised for their brilliance; I don’t think there is an award big enough for them.
If I could scream this from the rooftops for the whole world to hear – believe me – I would!!
Please know Northumbria Police are wonderful, amazing, and should be celebrated and recognised for their brilliance.
I will spend the rest of my life spreading positivity about Northumbria Police and how wonderful they are – I know my sister feels exactly the same.
The officer leading the case was Detective Constable Leo Douglas, who has also shared these words following Brett Wight’s sentencing:
First and foremost, I would like to thank the survivor for the incredible strength she has shown, which has ultimately made it possible to bring her abuser to justice.
No one should ever have to experience what she went through at the hands of Brett Wight, but without bravery in reporting what had happened, he would not be behind bars today, and his offending may never even have come to light.
She should be incredibly proud of her strength and bravery, and I want to thank her for her tenacity and continued cooperation throughout our investigation.
Brett Wight is dangerous and deserves to be behind bars for a significant time.
As a Force, protecting and supporting vulnerable victims is our top priority. We will continue to work incredibly hard to put offenders before the courts and ensure that no one gets away with this type of criminality.
If you have been a victim, we will encourage you to take that first step and come forward – you will be listened to and supported in whatever way you can.
