A violent Hull Rapist, Daniel Rutter, strangled and choked a sex worker in a “degrading and dehumanising” assault in Leeds.
Daniel Rutter, 34, formerly of Plane Street, Hull, and currently incarcerated at HMP Leeds, visited the victim’s residence after a mere two weeks of acquaintance and erupted in fury when she “accidentally knocked over his crack pipe.” The violent bully subsequently assaulted her, resulting in two black eyes, lacerations to her neck, and swelling of her lips, jaw, and ear.
The habitual offender possesses an extensive record of assaulting women, and Hull Crown Court was informed last year that the “sex-obsessed” Daniel Rutter indecently exposed himself to a policewoman while transit in a police van. He said repugnant remarks to her, proposing sexual acts, while engaging in a sexual act, and thereafter defecated and urinated in the van.
On Thursday, Leeds Crown Court was informed that Daniel Rutter repeatedly assaulted the woman at her residence in Burnsall Gardens, Leeds. She subsequently managed to evade his insults and depart from him prior to returning to her flat.
According to Leeds Live, Prosecutor Jade Bucklow stated that she subsequently allowed him to re-enter, “fearful” of his potential actions if she did not. Ms. Bucklow stated, “He entered and positioned himself in front of the door before striking her.”
He positioned himself over her, encircled her neck with his hands, and she fought for breath. She struck him in the groin, which was effective, and she subsequently began to scream. He [Daniel Rutter] covered his hand with a woolly hat, placed it over her lips, and struck her in the torso.
Law enforcement got a report of someone “screaming” at the location, where investigators subsequently discovered Rutter and the lady present. In his plea, Daniel Rutter contended that he did not cover the woman’s mouth with a hat to suffocate her, but rather to prevent bleeding after she bit him.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged that he covered her mouth with his hand. The Hull perpetrator asserted that the woman had sustained injuries before his arrival.
The woman had treatment at Leeds General Infirmary following the assault, sustaining two black eyes, lacerations to her neck, and swelling in her lips, the left side of her jaw, and her ear.
Daniel Rutter received a sentence for assault resulting in actual bodily harm, deliberate strangling, and intentional suffocation. He was additionally convicted for noncompliance with notice requirements after neglecting to inform the police of his homelessness.
During a police interrogation on December 19, Daniel Rutter delivered a pre-prepared statement indicating that he had visited the woman’s residence to consume alcohol, listen to music, and watch television. Ms. Bucklow stated: “He claimed they engaged in consensual intercourse during which she fell and struck her face against the table and chair.”
“The interviewing officer expressed his objection to her being a prostitute.”
The court was informed that Daniel Rutter had 39 prior convictions for 94 offences, including 16 offences against individuals. In November 2021, Rutter received a term for assaulting his ex-partner by slapping and spitting on her, few days following his release from incarceration.
Upon the arrival of the police to effectuate his arrest for the assault, he subsequently and forcefully spat at the policemen. His prior incarceration was for assaulting the same individual.
Mitigating, Michael Walsh stated that he had been diagnosed with an illness, subsequently identified as the life-shortening Huntington’s Disease. Mr. Walsh stated, “He is pragmatic regarding the nature of the sentence that will be rendered today.”
The probation agency has said that they believe they cannot collaborate with him due to his challenges that render him uncooperative, and because he is likely to be incarcerated; nonetheless, they will engage with him while he is in detention. He is an individual with intricate problems stemming from his mental health.
Mr. Walsh stated that Daniel Rutter was utilising drugs and, to a lesser degree, alcohol as a means of self-medication, which culminated in anxiety and the perpetration of these offences. The barrister stated: “He has expressed a desire to improve his response to stressful situations in the future.”
“Upon his release, he intends to pursue support for his mental health.”
His Honour Judge Robin Mairs informed the court that in the pre-sentence report, Rutter indicated that the woman desired to be strangled and he “made references” to her occupation as a sex worker. The judge stated that the report’s author wrote: “As if that offered justification for the offences.”
He stated: “Your demeanour towards the complainant, whom you assaulted and asphyxiated for hours, is degrading and dehumanising.” Your perception of her as a sex worker justifies the violence you inflicted against her. Your behaviour and demeanour towards her are reprehensible.
The judge sentenced Daniel Rutter to two years and seven months in incarceration. Daniel Rutter must serve a maximum of fifty percent of his sentence in detention prior to being granted release on licence.
