Prosecutors have said that French actor Gerard Depardieu will be subject to a criminal trial in October over the claimed sexual assaults of two women on the set of a movie.
Previously denied any misconduct, the 75-year-old actor was arrested for several hours earlier on Monday by police in Paris.
Following the questioning, the actor has been “summoned to appear before the criminal court,” according to a statement issued by the Paris public prosecutor.
Against “two victims, on the set of the film The Green Shutters”, the announcement stated, a trial scheduled for October “for sexual assaults likely to have been committed in September 2021”.
It omitted to name the claimed victims.
Gerard Depardieu, who became well-known in popular movies like Green Card and The Last Metro, disputes misbehaviour.
“I have never, ever abused a woman,” he declared in an open letter sent in October to a French publication.
Gerard Depardieu earned international recognition in various parts of Hollywood and has been a worldwide advocate for French cinema.
More than a dozen additional women have also claimed Gerard Depardieu has been accused of grabbing, pestering, or sexually abusing them.
Following claims from actress Charlotte Arnould in 2020, he was charged with preliminary rape and sexual assault.
Among the top celebrities involved in the #MeToo movement who encountered charges of sexual harassment and assault was Gerard Depardieu.
Having made over 180 films, the star was nominated for an Oscar for his title performance in Cyrano de Bergerac in 1990. He received a Golden Globe Best Comedic Actor award in 1991 for the box office blockbuster Green Card.
The films he starred in were 1492, Conquest of Paradise by Ridley Scott and Hamlet by Kenneth Branagh.
Once buddies with Vladimir Putin, he was granted Russian citizenship in 2013.

French Actor Gerard Depardieu, fined and given suspended sentence for sexual assault on two women.
The Actor was previously supported by some fellow actors and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The fine was around about 24,000 and and the court requested that he is registered in the national sex offender database.
