Two paedophile brothers, Girdaware Basra and Onkar Basra, from Gravesend, have been sentenced to a total of 25 years in prison for the sexual assault of a minor. The males perpetrated the acts in the 1990s, and detectives initiated an inquiry upon receiving a report from the victim in 2021.

Girdaware Basra, of Northcote Road, Gravesend, and Onkar Basra, of Regent Place, Rugby, Warwickshire, were charged with the rape of a girl and unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl. Girdaware Basra was additionally accused of indecently assaulting a female minor.

Girdaware Basra and Onkar Basra refuted the allegations and were found guilty at Woolwich Crown Court after a trial. On Friday, December 6, Girdaware Basra, aged 68, received a 14-year prison sentence, while Onkar Basra, aged 57, was sentenced to 11 years of incarceration.

Detective Constable Caroline Morton, the investigating officer, stated: “These extended sentences underscore the severity of the offences committed by both brothers.” Their victim endured the recollection of their offences for numerous years before feeling capable of coming forward to inform us.

“Reliving her ordeal during the trial has been difficult for the victim and I wish to commend her immense courage. I hope the sentences offer her some closure.

“Kent Police will always thoroughly investigate allegations of sexual offences, no matter when they took place. I want to encourage anyone who has been a victim to contact us. We will handle your case sensitively and you will be supported throughout.”
