The family of a man, Jay Abatan, they feel was a victim of a racially motivated attack will host a vigil to commemorate the 26th anniversary of his death.
In January 1999, Jay Abatan, a 42-year-old accountant from Eastbourne, was celebrating a work promotion on a night out in Brighton with his brother Michael.
He was assaulted outside the Ocean Rooms on Morley Street in Brighton, an incident that Michael Abatan has consistently regarded as racially motivated. Jay Abatan succumbed to injuries sustained during the attack days later.
The vigil in remembrance of Jay Abatan, consistent with previous vigils organised by the family since his demise, is scheduled to occur at Brighton Police Station on John Street from 11am to 12pm on Sunday, January 26, and will also include a renewed request for witnesses to come forward.
An associate of the alleged assailants has lately emerged to advocate for the campaign for justice and intends to participate in the Vigil. Sian Berry, Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion, and Bella Sankey, leader of Brighton and Hove City Council, have been invited to address the Vigil, having demonstrated support for the campaign.
An inquiry severely condemned Sussex Police who were doing their usual shite job, determining that officers had insufficiently contemplated the potential racial motivation behind the attack.
Sussex Police has issued an apology to Jay Abatan’s family for their shortcomings in the investigation of Jay’s death. [Editor’s Note: How generous of them…]
