An inquest jury has determined that failures across various authorities were responsible for the death of Zara Aleena, a law graduate. Jordan McSweeney, a recidivist sexual offender with a history of 28 prior convictions, committed the act of homicide against Zara, a 35-year-old woman, while she was making her way home after a night out in Ilford, located in the eastern part of London, during the early hours of June 26, 2022.
He was freed from prison on parole only nine days before the murder but violated the terms of his release and was sent back to jail on June 22nd.
The police were granted the authority to apprehend him 48 hours later; however, bureaucratic delays prevented them from doing so before his fatal act against Zara Aleena.
Ms Zara Aleena passed away in the hospital due to a severe head injury caused by blunt force trauma and compression of the neck. These injuries were inflicted many times during two distinct assaults.

Area coroner Nadia Persaud expressed her sympathies to the family and friends of Zara, who passed away exactly two years ago.

In November 2023, he successfully appealed to the Court of Appeal to decrease the minimum duration of his life sentence.
Ms Persaud requested that the jurors evaluate whether any deficiencies in the jail and probation systems or the Metropolitan Police played a role in Ms Aleena’s demise.
Following Jordan McSweeney’s release on license on June 17, 2022, the police failed to establish communication with him. However, the probation department delayed beginning his recall to prison for five days.
On the day he was released, he failed to attend his probation session, and his mother, who enabled Jordan McSweeney to continue sexually assaulting and killing, informed the staff that he had become unconscious due to excessive alcohol consumption at her residence.
The appointments were postponed again, but Jordan McSweeney failed to attend on both occasions. When detectives approached his mother again, she claimed she was unaware of his whereabouts.
Although there was no communication, the recall was not begun until June 22, and the report was officially completed on June 24, 2022.
The police were granted the authority to apprehend Jordan McSweeney at 4:10 pm on the same day.
On June 26, during the early hours, McSweeney committed the act of killing Ms. Aleena.
An inquest has shown that Jordan McSweeney, the alleged killer of Zara Aleena, reportedly assaulted other individuals using makeshift weapons and was under the influence of the synthetic drug known as spice while incarcerated the year before the crime. However, his prison offender manager failed to disclose this crucial information to anyone.
According to his probation worker, Austin Uwaifo, who recently became qualified, Jordan McSweeney should have been classified as a high-risk offender. Uwaifo would have advocated for his earlier return to jail if he had been.
According to Mr Uwaifo, his initial thought was to let the person in question return after being released on Friday. However, he speculates that the person may have chosen to go out and consume alcohol for some unknown reason.
Mr Uwaifo said the probation office was not manned on the weekend. However, he mentioned that if Jordan McSweeney had been classified as high-risk, he would have demanded an urgent recall outside regular working hours.
The police officer responsible for initiating Jordan McSweeney’s recall stated that the initial investigations into his location were prematurely concluded and further verifications should have been conducted.
According to Metropolitan Police Operations Sergeant Ian Batten, he did not anticipate any danger to the public from Jordan McSweeney after receiving a notice to return to prison on June 24, 2022.
Sgt Batten also stated that he was unaware that the initial investigations into Jordan McSweeney’s location had concluded before his shift’s conclusion.
