A deviant paedophile, Nathan Thomas, who discussed the sexual assault of minors was apprehended with photographs and recordings of the sexual abuse of an infant.

Nathan Thomas, 23, was apprehended by law enforcement after they visited his residence and confiscated his phone in November 2021. Newcastle Crown Court was informed that the Samsung Galaxy held 22 Category A images, comprising 12 still photos and 10 films, five Category B images—all stills—and two photographs of extreme pornography.

The court was informed that the youngest child represented was aged between two and six months, while one of the severe pornography photographs featured an animal. The court was informed that Nathan Thomas, residing on Haggerston Crescent, Newbiggin Hall Estate, Newcastle, was engaging in communication with another individual using an application.

Nathan Thomas engaged in “extremely detailed and graphic communications” relating to the sexually abuse of children and repeatedly referenced raping children, including newborn babies.

It was also suggested they would have a child who would become their “f**k toy” and it was suggested they become childminders, the court heard. The suggested sexual activity was made by the other person but the defendant encouraged it, the court was told.

The defendant sent two category A videos to the other person and continued to suggest the rape and torture of children to the extent of killing them during sex, the court was told.

The court was told Nathan Thomas had no previous offending history and was 20 years old when the incident occurred, and has not made any plans to rape babies and children since. The court heard he was an “intelligent” and “articulate” man.

On sentencing Recorder David Gordon said: “It is sometimes said offending of this sort is offending without a victim. This is entirely untrue and offences of this sort will always be treated by the courts with the utmost seriousness.

“Each image, still or moving, of child exploitation represents real harm to a real child. The act of possessing and downloading, and in your case distributing, perpetuates a demand for the creation of more images which in turn fuels a cycle of abuse and exploitation.”

Recorder Gordon said children are typically coerced and forced into participating, which causes trauma and can have a long term effect on their health.

He said it “created” a demand and incentivised people to continue making the videos and images, if there was a market for that kind of material.

“Children have a fundamental right to safety and dignity,” he continued. The court was told the images would be on the internet for the lifetime of the child.

Nathan Thomas pleaded guilty to the distribution of category A moving images, making (downloading) Category A indecent images of children and moving images, making indecent images of Category B possession of extreme pornography and was jailed for two years and three months.
