Nicky Coalwood, a 31-year-old paedophile from Nottinghamshire confessed to the police that he had been “addicted” to viewing horrendous child abuse images since his early adolescence. Nottingham Crown Court was informed that police discovered almost 1,700 disturbing photographs and videos of children as young as three on Nicky Coalwood’s gadgets, which were seized from his residence.

Additionally, tapes and images depicting adults in sexual acts with animals were retrieved. Judge James Sampson imposed a three-year community order on Nicky Coalwood, stating: “Viewing and downloading this material constitutes participation in the abuse of children.” You have acknowledged a persistent issue to the police.

“You said to them, and I quote, ‘Since I was a young teenager, it has become an addiction. I am not proud of it; I am ashamed of it. You have now been caught and made full and frank admissions to the police. It is now time to begin again; you have one chance at this, do you understand? Take it.”

Annabel Lenton, prosecuting, said police received information indecent images of children were being uploaded to X (formerly Twitter) from an internet address linked to Nicky Coalwood, and so, in March 2022, officers attended his address in Mansfield. She said they took away many devices and analysed them.

The prosecutor said: “On an HP laptop, there was 372 category A (the most serious), including 151 videos; 220 category B, including 33 videos; 346 category C, including 32 videos; 494 prohibited images of children, including 18 videos and 322 extreme pornographic images, including 121 videos.

“They showed boys and girls as young as three years of age. On a Samsung mobile phone, there were also 18 prohibited images of children and two extreme pornographic images.” Coalwood, of Langford Road, pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children, one count of possession of prohibited images of children and one count of possession of extreme pornography.

Nicky Coalwood has no previous convictions of any kind, having not been previously caught, and admitted his offending at the earliest opportunity, his barrister Bianca Brasoveanu said.

As well as the community order, Judge Sampson handed Nicky Coalwood a five-year sexual harm prevention order and placed him on the sex offender register for five years.
