Nicole Louise Cooper, also known as Nicole Gould, 23, from Whitchurch Park, Bristol, abandoned two dogs in her flat, resulting in their agonising starvation to death.

Nicole Louise Cooper resided in a bedsit on Molesworth Close, Withywood, Bristol BS13, with her dogs, Bruno and Aniyla, which she had owned for three years since their puppyhood.

In October 2024, she heartlessly abandoned the dogs after relocating and never returned.

On 13 December 2024, police officials doing a welfare check on Nicole Louise Cooper encountered the distressing sight of the decomposing bodies of abandoned canines within the unoccupied property.

RSPCA Inspector Dan Hatfield, who led the investigation for the charity, described: “The flat was a bedsit with the main room being just 10ft x 15 ft. In that room, as well as the bed, was a cage which was 2ft high and 3ft long which contained the body of Bruno, lying on his side.

“He had no eyes left and was covered in insects. His body was stuck to the matting in the cage. The cage itself would have been sufficient for him to be in for a short time – an hour or two – but no longer due to being so small.

“The second dog, Aniyla, was also dead and lying next to the cage – but outside of it, and also in a state of decay. Both dogs were thin and had overgrown claws.”

A vet who examined the bodies said the ultimate cause of death would have been through dehydration and starvation leading to organ failure.

In their report to the court, the vet described the dogs’ passing as “a very inhumane way to die”.

In court, Nicole Louise Cooper pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal following a prosecution by the RSPCA.

  • She was sentenced to a one-year custodial suspended for two years;
  • Ordered to complete five days of ‘rehabilitation’;
  • Ordered to pay £587 towards costs and a victim surcharge.
  • Banned indefinitely from owning animals but can appeal after 15 years [LOL ONLY IN BRITAIN].
