Police are hunting for a 71-year-old sex offender who fled court as a jury was debating whether he was guilty or not.

Paul Ashworth, from the Lowestoft area in Suffolk, is thought to have fled to the south coast and Border Force officers have been alerted in case he is trying to flee the country.

He was last seen at Ipswich Crown Court on 7 February, where he was on trial for three sex offences.

Police said Ashworth, who was not on remand, left the court building while the jury was deliberating and failed to return.

He was found guilty in his absence and is due to be sentenced on 4 April

Police have issued a warrant for Ashworth, who they say may be using the alias of Edward John Oliver.

He was caught on CCTV withdrawing money from an ATM in Portsmorth on 24 February.

Suffolk Police said they have contacted the UK Border Force and – in respect of the latest development – Hampshire Police.

Anyone who believes they have seen Paul Ashworth, or who has any information regarding his whereabouts, is asked to contact police quoting reference: 37/8971/25.
