PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley

This is not our normal type of listing but PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley (a married couple) really touched us with this outstanding show of bravery! Even if they don’t win the award, we hope they get some kind of tribute.

PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley were driving home while off-duty when they spotted smoke coming from the house in an undisclosed area of the town.

They have since been shortlisted for Staffordshire Police’s Excellence in Bravery award following the incident, which happened in June 2024.

After dialling 999, PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley forced open the front door of the house and tried to find out whether anyone was trapped inside. At this point, the garage was completely engulfed in flames.

A woman was found downstairs and DC Katy Sigley helped to bring her outside.

The unnamed woman then told DC Katy Sigley that her husband was upstairs. PC Mark Sigley tried to find him, but the fire was too dangerous.

PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley also advised the householders of the neighbouring home to evacuate after spotting that the wind was blowing the flames towards that property. They also managed to reassure, the man who was trapped upstairs, by speaking to him while firefighters began work to go inside.

He was later taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. Both the man and his wife have since made a recovery.

The force said the PC Mark Sigley and DC Katy Sigley demonstrated “swift and brave actions had undoubtedly saved the lives of both occupants that evening”.
