A Carlisle Paedophile, Richard Nobes, acquired thousands of disturbing child abuse photographs featuring children as young as six.

The jail sentence imposed on 46-year-old Richard Nobes for his offences was suspended when a judge acknowledged his role as the primary caring for his elderly father and recognised a viable possibility for rehabilitation.

The defendant, Richard Nobes, residing on Sheffield Street in Carlisle, acknowledged four offences.

Richard Nobes downloaded 1,359 obscene child photographs categorised as Category A, the most severe classification; 674 Category B images; and 4,291 Category C images.

Richard Nobes perpetrated the offences between November 7, 2020, to May 6, 2021. Nobes acknowledged the possession of illicit photos of minors on June 17. He refuted a sixth accusation of possessing extreme pornography.

The prosecution acknowledged the plea.

Prosecutor Brendan Burke stated that the offences were revealed on June 17 when police, acting on received intelligence, visited the Carlisle residence where Nobes was residing and conducted a search.

Upon the arrival of the police, Richard Nobes seemed to comprehend the reason for their presence, however he informed the officers, “That was years ago.”

Mr. Burke stated, “The images were produced between April 2019 and May 2021.”

Mr. Burke stated that all photos retrieved by the police were unavailable to the defendant at the time of his arrest, as he had erased them. Richard Nobes had been utilising a social networking platform favoured by the youth.

Judge Andrew Jefferies KC stated that two aspects of the defendant’s misconduct were especially grave. The huge quantity of obscene child photographs included both static and moving visuals, with some subjects as young as six years old.

The second aggravating factor was the accusation related to the circulation of certain photos implicated. Judge Jefferies sentenced the defendant to eight months of incarceration, which was suspended for a duration of two years.

He stated that he acted for three reasons: the defendant’s remorse, his potential for recovery, and his role as the primary carer for his father, substantiated by medical evidence.

The suspended sentence comprises 40 rehabilitation activity days aimed at addressing the defendant’s “interest in children.” Richard Nobes will be listed on the Sex Offender Register for ten years.

A sexual harm prevention order regulating his internet usage will be enforced for the same duration. Judge Jefferies informed Richard Nobes: “I would have imposed an immediate eight-month prison sentence, but two factors prevented me.”

The probation officer believes that you may be managed to mitigate any sexual interest in minors and that rehabilitation is feasible; also, I have reviewed materials and excerpts concerning your father’s poor health and your role as his primary carer.

“Should I incarcerate you today, even for a brief duration, it would disproportionately impact your father, who is blameless.” (Editor’s note – which is a ridiculous sentiment as Richard Nobes did not mold himself into a paedophile)

The defendant, reportedly experiencing unspecified ‘stresses’ at the time of the charges, had resided at a home on Lightfoot Drive, Harraby, Carlisle. Richard Nobes possessed no prior convictions as he had not been caught before.
