A Sunderland rapist sex offender, Robert Jeavons, who disregarded a woman’s entreaties to cease during a sexual assault then bragged, “She wouldn’t consent, so I took it regardless,” when confronted about the incident.

The remark would later incriminate Robert Jeavons, as it constituted evidence in the rape case brought to trial.

During a plea hearing at Durham Crown Court in March, the 34-year-old defendant, Robert Jeavons, refuted three charges of rape brought against him.

A trial is scheduled for September this year, with an estimated duration of three days, to be held in court.

On the day the woman provided her pre-trial testimony last month, Robert Jeavons altered his plea to guilty about one of the alleged instances.

The Crown accepted the plea, and the two further alleged rape allegations were left unresolved in the file.

During the sentence hearing, the rape victim delivered her impact statement, addressing Robert Jeavons and stating: It is unacceptable what you have inflicted upon us.

You have irrevocably altered the course of my existence. I shall never absolve you for your actions.

She stated that she currently had difficulty sleeping, and when she does, she endures nightmares that evoke the traumatic experience.

However, she vowed that despite the mental and physical repercussions of the act, she can and will endeavour to go forward with her life.

Robin Turton, representing the prosecution, stated that the defendant, residing at an address on Norfolk Street, Sunderland, had a solitary unrelated caution for engaging in sexual activity with a minor under 16, recorded in 2008.

Ian West, in mitigation, stated that the prior event occurred when Robert Jeavons was merely 21 years old.

He stated that by pleading to the present charge at that time, it was well ahead of the scheduled trial and conserved three days of court time.

Judge James Adkin stated that the victim was scheduled to provide her testimony on that day; nonetheless, he consented to grant Robert Jeavons a 15 percent reduction in his sentence to acknowledge the guilty plea.

The defendant engaged in intercourse with the woman despite her explicit request to cease, but thereafter made a de facto confession.

The court imposed a total sentence of 61 months of jail, equating to five years and one month, and additionally subjected Robert Jeavons to a lifelong restraining order, forbidding any attempts to contact or approach the victim.

The defendant will be required to register as a sex offender for life.
