UPDATE 04.07.25
A father who fatally shook his infant daughter, resulting in “catastrophic” brain impairments, is facing imprisonment.
Thomas Holford, 25, has been found guilty of murdering his daughter Everleigh Stroud, who passed away at the age of one due to “excessive and severe” shaking that resulted in brain and bone injuries when she was at five weeks old.
Everleigh was urgently transported to the hospital after her grandma indicated that she was “barely” breathing on the morning of April 21, 2021. However, Holford exhibited “minimal emotion” and persisted in downloading and playing games on his phone, according to jurors.
He subsequently deceived the police over his cannabis consumption to conceal that he had smoked the previous night while supervising Everleigh alone.
Today, Holford of Ramsgate was unanimously convicted of murder and actual bodily injury against his daughter by a jury at Canterbury Crown Court.
The court heard that, in addition to sustaining brain damage resulting in a vegetative condition, she suffered from bone fractures, facial bruising, ocular atrophy leading to blindness, and anal injuries after spending the previous night in her father’s custody.
Everleigh, born on March 13, 2021, remained in a vegetative condition for over a year before passing away at 14 months on May 27, 2022.
Eloise Marshall KC, in her prosecution, stated: “During the night of April 20 into the early morning of April 21, 2021, when Everleigh was slightly over five weeks old, she sustained catastrophic injuries leading to significant brain damage, ultimately resulting in her death just over a year later.
There is no contention regarding the cause of Everleigh’s injuries; they were inflicted by her father, Thomas Holford.”
Everleigh succumbed when her life support system was deactivated a year post-attack, which resulted in significant injuries to her head, ribcage, and legs.
Holford deceived law enforcement over his cannabis consumption and, while testifying, informed jurors that he had consumed at least five joints the night prior to Everleigh’s hospitalisation.
In response to prosecution barrister Eloise Marshall KC’s inquiry on his falsehood about cannabis consumption, he stated: “I am attempting to convey an image that surpasses reality.”
During the attack, Holford resided with his 16-year-old girlfriend and her parents at a location on Wallwood Road.
Text exchanges presented to jurors indicate that he attempted to procure marijuana from an associate referred to as “Milo,” since he was aware that Milo was caring for his daughter.
He wrote a message stating: “Could you provide me with anything, as I am alone with the child tonight.” It is going to be exceedingly stressful.
