Yesterday, we received the distressing news that convicted paedophile Wander Franco was receiving a lenient punishment in the Dominican Republic. The former Tampa Bay Rays star was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison for his offences.
Is it even more detrimental? It is a suspended sentence; therefore, if he does not engage in any misconduct—specifically, any more interactions with minors for sexual purposes—he will not serve the punishment.
Wander Franco’s two-year incarceration is stayed. If he does not comply with the terms established by the judge, primarily the prohibition against approaching youngsters with sexual intentions, he will be required to serve the sentence.
This individual deliberately entered into a relationship with a juvenile aged fourteen years. Additionally, he was discovered in texts stating, “I took a risk and I loved it.” It was revealed that he instructed the girl to disregard all prior knowledge and to be raised according to his methods. This individual should never again be exposed to sunlight. His destiny should be either being devoured by sharks or confined in a pit for eternity. I understand that it is the Dominican Republic, and the apprehension of his potential leniency due to his financial resources was always conceivable, if not likely; yet, it remains deplorable. Indeed, he will never secure a visa again and hence will be permanently barred from re-entering the United States to participate in baseball; nevertheless, that is far from sufficient.
The other disturbing development is that the minor’s mother was significantly culpable for exploiting her daughter by facilitating her involvement with Wander Franco. She received tens of thousands of dollars and subsequently transported her daughter via helicopter to rendezvous with Wander Franco. Martha Vanessa Chevalier Almonte, the mother of the victim in the Wander Franco case, was convicted of sexually trafficking her daughter and received a 10-year prison sentence.
This narrative is entirely unfavourable. There is no semblance of a joyful conclusion whatsoever. It serves as a stark reminder of the profound hardships many individuals endure globally. It is hoped that Wander Franco receives his just recompense by alternative means, given the failure of the court system in that region.
