A Basingstoke and Scotland Rapist, Dean Newton, was sentenced to five years and three months in jail for sexual offences committed in Plymouth.
Dean Newton, 51, of Basingstoke at the time of the incident but now residing in Scotland, appeared at Plymouth Crown Court for sentence on Thursday, July 11, having been convicted following a trial of causing or persuading a person to engage in sexual conduct without consent and voyeurism.
Newton committed the crimes in a hotel room after a night out in Plymouth in October 2019.
The incidents involve the same victim and were discovered in January 2020 when he approached police to report what had occurred.
Newton engaged in sexual activities with the victim while he slept that night, taking images of him naked on his phone.
Newton was arrested in Basingstoke, where he was living at the time, and was charged in 2023 after a thorough and lengthy investigation by the Sexual Offences Investigation Team detectives.
He was found guilty at a trial at Plymouth Crown Court that began on July 2 and was remanded in custody for sentencing.
Officer in Charge, DC Andrea Dominik stated, “Newton used the opportunity to perpetrate these sexual offences against a young vulnerable victim, and they have had a substantial impact on the victim’s life, health, and relationships, and will continue to do so for the rest of his life.
“The victim has demonstrated tremendous bravery and dedication to the inquiry and court procedure. I hope the verdict today brings some closure to the events for him. His voice has been heard, and the outcome of the trial indicates that victims will be believed and justice will be served.
“Devon and Cornwall Police are committed to reducing sexual violence.” We understand that the criminal justice system can be tough for victims at times, but there are safeguards in place to help them throughout the process. I hope this gives more individuals the courage to speak up.”
