For a non-recent rape, a Salisbury Rapist has been sentenced to seven years in jail. James Haggaty, 30, of North View, Berwick St James, was sentenced at Salisbury Crown Court on June 20.

James Haggaty met his victim at a taxi station following an evening out on August 30, 2013. He escorted her back to a home and sexually attacked her after helping a buddy into a taxi.

For several years, his victim remained silent about the attack until 2021, when she reported it to the police.

“I always thought I would never be believed, and the longer I left it, the more unlikely any chance of getting justice seemed,” his victim stated in a statement delivered before the court.

“It took me a long time to get the confidence to tell the police mainly because I had discovered that you (James Haggaty) were on trial earlier for a similar offence.

“Today differs from the person I was eleven years ago. I search for healing and fairness. Though it can confirm the seriousness of the act and the strength of survivors, no sentence can repair what has been done.”

Sergeant Matt Goldring said: “James Haggaty took advantage of her victim when she was in a very vulnerable situation.

“I want to praise the victim for her bravery and consistent strength over this period.

“Anyone who has been a victim of a sexual offence, regardless of the duration, is advised to notify authorities. Since we cannot accept such aggression, we will keep putting offenders before the courts.
