An Isle of Wight sex offender, Jamie Matlock, has been released from detention despite receiving a prison sentence for inflicting “horrifying” injuries on his former spouse.

Jamie Matlock, from Hope Mead, Newchurch, appeared at the IW Crown Court on Tuesday, December 17, for sentencing.

The 43-year-old, Jamie Matlock, first entered a plea of not guilty to a solitary charge of assault occasioning real bodily harm during his magistrates’ court hearing in May, but altered his plea on the day of his crown court trial.

Tim Devlin, for the prosecution, stated that Matlock knocked on his former partner’s door at 10:45 PM on May 8, carrying a bottle of gin.

The court was informed that Jamie Matlock’s demeanour was first favourable, but it rapidly deteriorated, leading to abusive conduct.

Mr. Devlin stated that Jamie Matlock threatened to kill his ex-partner if she established a relationship with another man before brandishing a hammer; however, it is contested whether he employed it against her.

Mr. Devlin informed the court that Jamie Matlock executed a “relentless attack” against her, which including hurling a table at her, resulting in substantial injuries to her face, arm, shoulder, shin, right eye, and palm.

Mr. Devlin stated that Jamie Matlock informed his former partner that if she reported the assault, he would face significant imprisonment, so manipulating her and exploiting her emotions.

The woman contacted a relative, who persuaded her to notify the police about Matlock.

Jamie Matlock, described by the probation service as a “significant threat to the public,” had not been told his ex-partner’s new address, said Mr Devlin, and had sought it out on his own.

Oliver Hirsch, defending, disputed the prosecution’s account of the assault, saying that there was “no suggestion” that his client threw a table at his ex-partner.

Jamie Matlock’s victim was taken to hospital and given a CT scan, which showed no concerns.

Mr Hirsch also challenged the prosecution’s claims that Matlock had sought out his ex-partner’s home, insisting that she had informed him of her address.

Judge Melville read a list of Matlock’s previous 180 offences, which includes thefts, criminal damage and assaults.

He described Jamie Matlock’s actions as “extremely unpleasant,” adding that his ex-partner’s injuries were “horrifying.”

Judge Melville told Jamie Matlock: “You assaulted her mercilessly. You cannot control yourself.

“You do not seem to accept that this kind of behaviour is unacceptable, and I do not accept that you are remorseful.”

Jamie Matlock was handed a 16-month prison sentence – but due to his time already spent in custody, he was released immediately in time for Xmas.
