A victim commended an officer for his empathy and professionalism following the incarceration of her Paedophile assailant, Paul Evans. Paul Evans established a friendship with the victim and extended an invitation for her to attend a gathering at his residence in Middlesbrough; however, upon her arrival, she found herself alone at the location.

The 56-year-old informed her that additional individuals would arrive thereafter and intoxicated the victim before assaulting her.

In March 2021, officers initiated an investigation following the victim’s courageous disclosure to the police over the crime that occurred between 1989 and 1990.

Paul Evans was apprehended and charged with indecent assault, subsequently appearing in court to refute the allegation. Fortunately, the jury discerned his deceit and rendered a guilty verdict.

Paul Evans was presented at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday, April 1st, when he received a nine-year prison sentence, along with an additional year on extended license.

The victim commended Detective Constable John Smith for his professionalism and expressed gratitude for his diligent efforts in her comments.

She said: “He has been professional, and also human. He is the best advertisement for a ‘good copper’. It’s been really hard for me but, I’ve never felt alone, belittled or unbelieved.

“I just wish I could show more gratitude because this case wouldn’t have got to court without his hard work. I can’t thank him enough for believing me, treating me like a person and conducting a proper investigation.”

DC John Smith said: “Paul Evans’ cruel lies forced the victim to give evidence in court and relive such a traumatic event in her life. Thanks to her evidence however, Evans was found guilty.

“I’d like to commend the victim for her courage and her unwavering support throughout this whole process. It was extremely brave for her to report the incident to us and then follow it through the court process.

“I hope this reassures anyone who may have experienced rape or sexual assault that you will be listened to, you will be believed, and you will be supported throughout. We are here to help whenever you’re ready to report something to us.”
