A predator paedophile, Rhys Walker, who sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl following online grooming has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Rhys Walker, 24, communicated with the youngster for several weeks before coercing her into sexual actions, as shown in Newcastle Crown Court.

He rejected the charges of rape and sexual assault but was convicted of both offences by the jury.

Judge Tim Gittins stated that Walker, hailing from West Boldon in South Tyneside, was aware of and “exploited” the “especially vulnerable” girl’s age and her challenging domestic circumstances.

At the age of 21, Rhys Walker established a friendship with the girl on social media and promptly began transmitting sexualised photographs, as presented in court.

Jurors were informed that after three or four weeks, he proposed that the girl reside at his home.

Judge Gittins stated that it ostensibly seemed to be an offer of refuge; however, Rhys Walker was, in fact, “attempting to isolate her” in order to employ coercion for sexual engagement.

In a declaration presented to the court, the girl asserted that the assault had profoundly impaired her mental health, resulting in self-harm, as well as inducing flashbacks and insomnia.

“I am gratified that others have believed my account, allowing me to attain closure, knowing he can no longer harm anyone else,” the girl stated, adding: “I can finally commence the process of moving on with my life.”

Rhys Walker, of Hall Gardens, is required to register as a sex offender and comply with a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his use of internet-enabled devices indefinitely.
